  3. Somebody wasn't paying attention to the boiler; the pressure got too high. The outer casing that contained the water and steam is gone, exposing the tubes that connected the firebox to the chimney. Boiler explosions were a fairly common and dangerous occurrence.

  4. Supposedly, boiler explosions were the impetus behind the invention of the Stirling engine.

    Most of the "famous" boiler explosions were caused by low boiler water level.
