Would you not freeze to death in the open like that?

  1. B-24 Liberator. Look closely you can see the Plexiglas bubble. Not freezing, as such, but going deaf is another matter. WHAT? EH?

  2. all shot up and no place to go. The feed tray of the nearest 50 is gone, the elevation mechanism is damaged and the turret ring is hit and probably locked in place too. Once that got hit, Bob probably dropped himself down inside to nurse his wounds.

  4. The aircraft doesn't look like it's flying that high, given damage they may have had to return low. If so and depending on the time of year, he might just be "cool". The fact that he's got his head out looking for bad guys suggests he might be cool for another reason.

  5. Looks like he's on the ground. There are people standing under the Stbd hor stab.

  6. There's a bullet hole dead center in the bubble about six inches up from the base. We may be looking at a corpse.

  7. This is a gunner who survived a close call. Most, not all, of the plexi is shot away. The aircraft is on the ground. He is posed for the camera. Many such pictures of the damage from close calls were meant for the folks back home. Remember, their was a continuous war bond drive going on. The folks back home had to see what their boys faced every day while fighting fascism.

  8. That his goggles are on his forehead would seem to indicate the plane isn't moving.
