In the tail of P-2 and P-3 patrol planes we had a compressed air retro cannon that was used to drop a smoke marker precisely on a marked location in the water. The air charge was calibrated to the airspeed of the airplane to cause the smoke marker to drop straight down. Made a LOT of noise when it fired also.

Which way did it bounce?
