  3. I think it is part of the in-flight refueling system. AWACS are modifications of conversions of standard models, and I suspect there's no in-flight refueling system on the original. Probably safer to route the gas line outside the hull than inside.

    Just a guess.

    1. I think you're right. The RAF had problems with the Nimrods because the refuelling pipe ran through the passenger compartment.
