Savoia Marchetti S.55

  1. Igor Sikorsky ( designed 312 airplanes. invented the helicopter ) once said that airplane designers should test fly their own designs, so bad designs would eliminate bad designers

    just sayin...

  2. The S-55 was in fact an excellent airplane and held a number of speed, altitude, distance and weight world records. S-55s used to routinely cross the Atlantic in the 1920s, capped by a flight of 24 of them to the U. S., led by Italo Balbo. Ever since, the term "balbo" is used (at least in Europe) to denote a large formation of aircraft.

    Just sayin...

  3. Balbo Drive in Chicago, named for Italo, was almost renamed Ida B Wells Drive.
