Views of the construction and unveiling of the USS Shenandoah (ZR-1), the first airship built for the US Navy, 1922-23.

  1. Interesting build of an airship. What my mind looked at is space to set up an enormous HO scale railroad and have several scale elevation grades... and be out of the rain and housewives.

  2. ZR-1 was constructed during 1922–23 at Lakehurst Naval Air Station New Jersey. I was in that same hanger in the early 1960s and it was enormous. An amazing construction feat in the early 1920s.

  3. I did a job at Lakehurst in 1984....after the precon, I asked about the spot where the Hindenburg went down....the reply was "doesn't anybody know anything else about this place?"....the hanger was still there then, though not in use....
