And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

A Lightning based at RAF Leaconfield is seen demonstrating its impressive climb ability over the East Yorkshire countryside in September 1965.
Once you're over about 60K, you need to wear a space suit, or your blood boils and that's not desirable. I don't know what the mechanical ceiling for the lightning is, but likely over 60K.
Operational ceiling was 60,000', but could zoom climb to 70,000'. Combat radius on a supersonic interceptor was a measly 135 miles, and that was with putting fuel bladders everywhere possible, including in the flaps!
