Ricou Browning (February 16, 1930 – February 27, 2023). Wonder how much the company paid him an hour for this work?

  1. According to Google - the average hourly wage in 1930 was $1.78 per hour.

    1. And Creature From The Black Lagoon was made in 1954, not 1930.
Stunt performer rates then were around $50/day, probably for a twelve hour day.
So around $4.17/hr, when minimum wage in CA was 75¢/hr.
Nice work if you could get it.

  2. From IMDb -
"Two different stuntmen were used to portray the creature, and therefore, two different suits were used in the movie. Ricou Browning played the creature when it was in the water and wore a lighter suit, Ben Chapman played the creature when it was out of the water with a darker suit."

Ricou got the job because he could hold his breath for four minutes.
I think I'd have preferred Ben Chapman's job. He got to carry Julie Adams around in his arms.
