  1. Junk? Mine works fine. It's not only nice to call for help if you need it in places with no cell service, but it's also great for coordinating with your pickup ride when you are doing a through-hike in remote places. I've had mine a few years and have no complaints at all. It does exactly what I bought it for, and the minimum subscription fee is reasonable for the capability it gives. What's not to like?

  2. How does that system differ from StarLink?

    1. Starlink is for internet, this provides GPS navigation and texting ability.

  3. I still have one 60 minute sim for my 20+ year old sat-phone, it has the CAT 5 plug on the back for slow internet.

  4. I use the Ocean Signal PLB1. No subscription (other than the 2 year free registration), and it works.

  5. My sister has one of these and I have her hand-me-down Garmin Explorer. Works great. It uses geosynchronous GPS satellites for nav capabilities and low-orbit satellites for the communication function. Sometimes I have to wait 5-10 minutes for a comm satellite to go over to send or check for messages.

There are different plans, I have the cheap $8/month plan where texts cost .50 each. Sis has an expensive plan with unlimited free texts. Sending one of the three standard messages is free. It has an SOS function where Garmin notifies a local 9-1-1 dispatcher.

  6. It's worked well for the three people I know using one & has been for years in one case.

  7. If it fails, you're no worse off than not having it at all.
If it works, you're saved, alive.
    This is a no-brainer choice.
