  3. I considered doing that with a 172 in St. Louis. Had a dead battery. Return trip after recharging a dead battery had cost me 4 hours. Just long enough to have to land in the Chicago area in a rain squall. All VFR, though. Most of the trip north of Springfield was SPECIAL VFR. Long before alphabet class airspace. Didn't fly for decades after that one.
