And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
A looong time ago, Jack Benny did show featuring Jack and the gang, and Mel Blanc as Polly the parrot. Jack and Mary and Phil Harris were planning a weekend in Palm Springs, and Jack didn't want the parrot to hear about it because she'd want to go along, so he told everybody to spell it out so Polly wouldn't catch on.
This led to people saying things like "let's get ready to go to P-a-l-m S-p-r-i-n-g-s," and Mel Blanc as the parrot repeating "P-a-l-m S-p-r-i-n-g-s. What's it spell, what's it spell? WRAACK whistle." Jack thinking fast, says....."'Vacuum cleaner,' Polly. It spells vacuum cleaner,'" whereupon the parrot repeats "P-a-l-m S-p-r-i-n-g-s: Vacuum cleaner. WRAACK!" every time somebody spelled it out.
I'm 80, and to this day I can't see or hear the words "Palm Springs" without hearing Mel Blanc's parrot voice intoning "P-a-l-m S-p-r-i-n-g-s: Vacuum cleaner. WRAACK!"
