Marooned

  1. When taking off from Taos airport on a hot August morning, I told myself that no way am I going down in that canyon.

That canyon is a deep gorge of the Rio Grande River. My route crossed right over the cut soon after takeoff. Even at 5am the temperature was 80° and climbing. Field elevation of 7,100 made for a high density altitude.

My briefing included that if the engine hiccups even once, if on the ground abort the T.O. If in the air, turn to avoid the canyon and accept the results.

All went fine, but no way was I gonna go into that canyon.

Being marooned is bad enough. Being marooned deep in a canyon is far worse. Good luck, intrepid explorer.

  2. I see the problem. The giggle switch (aft of the cockpit) is in the S position.
