Some builders put them up at their saw mill, leave them up to 4 years before breaking them down and rebuilding on a customers property. The planks are V shaped, V on lower plank pointing up, corresponding upper has a v trough, that way no leak path for water to get into the joint. They seem to last very well, looked at pre civil war cabins and the mortar joint is fine, long as the cement is kept painted with white paint, for some reason I don't know why.
The one thing (for me) to make this wonderful log cabin get away even more perfect would be to have the front porch roof expanded to cover the entire front.

"Almost" in almost perfect could have been removed with a roof over the chairs; needed to sit on the porch during a rain shower.
