  1. Ah yes, R 2 4 1 3 5...the ancient code of my generation. The code is solved thusly: 1 2 3 4 5 and then R if you must.

  4. Jeez, every real American knows the 1-2 shift is the most important. You gotta slam that shifter straight down and pop the clutch to get that 2nd gear wheel spin, let people know you got something under the hood. That gated shifter is some euro-trash BS, I tell you what. Get you a good American transmission, with the 1-2-3-4 and the R is off to the side by itself, where it belongs. Give me my 1-2 slam shift or I'm not going to bother.

    2. That gated shifter reminds me of that Renault-ish looking thing that Burt Reynolds stole in "The Longest Yard".

    3. I was told that the straight 2-3 path comes from circuit racing, where those are most frequently used, and frequently. Euro cars rarely gave much value to drag racing, unlike here.

    4. Start in 2nd gear unless you're on a hill. Used to do that in my VW Beetle.

    5. Hear, hear!
But having had a manual in a '69 Mustang, I have no idea what that 4 is for.
It hit passed 130 in 3rd gear, going uphill. Until common sense kicked in, and I eased back on the long pedal until I was crawling along at 65 again.

  5. Remember well stuffing a Muncie manual tranny and hurst 4 speed, with white cue ball knob, in my 66 Elcamino, it was the hot set-up those days. You could feel all that v8 power in your hand as you put the gas down, things sure changed so much now.

  7. Now some cars gone to sequential shift gear boxes. Lot quicker shifting, no hunting for a gate. Been that way on motorcycles, only diff is you use your hand stead of a foot.
