And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

One Enormous Surf Rod. Anybody use gear like that?
My mum lived on Marthas Vineyard and would see folks would very long rods shore fishing, not sure of actual length but estimate 14-16's,mostly saw that during the annual fishing derby, folks take that very seriously down there.
I've got a ten foot and a twelve, The twelve is a bear to cast for distance as it's very stiff. Caught a 39 and 3/4" striper on the ten some years ago.
I do have a twelve foot. As you say, it's too stiff. So I use it for fishing deep holes between the rocks, where length is better than trying for a precise cast.
The sixteen is better than my fourteen. That last bit of limber makes a bigger difference than you might think.
Tru to find a nursery or botanical garden that has tall stands of bamboo. Every year, probably late spring, but they have to cut back the fast growing bamboo. See if you can score an eighteen to twenty-four foot section. Cut from the top to get your final length. Lash on some line guides and your're in business.
If I ever start a cover band, I'm going to use "Enormous Surf Rod" as a the band name. The childish part of my brain keeps repeating "Enormous Surf Rod" and giggling.
John, are you channeling your inner Andy Dwyer? It seems like the potentially thousands of band names he generated on P&R were great, and, in fact, never included "Enormous Surf Rod", which would have been awesome.
Me.
ReplyDeleteIn Hawaii, a 20' bamboo for catching Ulua (Trevallie) from the beach in the ancient way.
In California, 14 and 16' rods for catching Barred Surf Perch from the beach to sell to restaurants.
Rick, thanks for the info! I'm impressed by those 16 to 20 foot rods. Serious fishing.
DeleteYou're welcome. You'll need a proper casting reel. Not a spinning reel with a bale. Go get 'em.
DeleteWhat the heck does she have on the end of the line?
ReplyDeleteSurfer.

DeleteHuman corpse?
DeleteProbably a sawtooth.

I used an arboretum at a university to source my bamboo. They were happy to have me put it to use. Free of charge.

Delete"Bad Virgin"
DeleteWould work for stripped bass in New England. I used a 12 foot rod but longer would’ve helped with casting beyond the sand bars.
ReplyDeleteBetter than pilates..
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, lots, caught some fine fish, need one for surf casting for stripers and yellow fins.
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed. Not one lewd comment.
