And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Lucca. In the background you can see a part of the medieval city walls. Completely preserved as a park with lots of large, shady trees. You can circle the whole city on top of it, because there is a fifteen feet wide paved path. Quite unique.
Reminds me of when I was driving in Graz, Austria. The road layout is like a vortex, sucking your car into the center of the city. Eventually it's too late. Can't keep driving, can't turn around. You're just screwed. So I drove through the open area in the middle, which obviously wasn't the right answer. A cop car pulled up along side me, window down. My German is poor but maybe passable. Instead I opted to play dumb. 'Do you speak English?' He decided I was a stupid American and waved me on, frustrated or amused.
Thats cool! Bet you end up knowing at least half your neighbors there. Great spot for a pig roast everyones invited, BYOB and a tasty dish.
ReplyDeletePiazza dell'Anfiteatro, Lucca.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Needs a fountain/statue or something.
ReplyDeleteI bet it was built on the bleachers of a Roman amphitheater, with the stage turned into a medieval forum.
