  1. As it should be. I consider this one of the top five books every American must read, and one of my personal favorites. Hackett Fisher is a real historian, and he doesn't approach his subjects with disdain, like many do. His preface to Champlain's Dream is worth reading just for his eloquent defense of his approach.

  4. You could say this is a wonderful companion book, its unlike any history i have read, because it delves into what regular people where doing to create liberty, the funny thing here is its a total information war, but colonial era style, it changes like totally how you think things went down.
Its also free on kindle cause it was written so long ago. It is really an excellent work.

  5. Does it have the anecdote that Paul was a celebrated cuckold? His wife would bang the slaves while he watched.

  6. Just bought it in hardcover, used copy.

I can also recommend Rick Atkinson's 'The British are Coming', the first book in his planned trilogy of the American Revolution. It covers the leadup to the war and its first battles, and is very good. Second book is coming out next month !

Looking forward to our 250th Anniversary! As a boy, I was marching to Concord with a ragtag bunch of costumed Revolutionary Minutemen on April 19th, 1975, to celebrate the Bicentennial. The Battle at the North Bridge is re-enacted every year.

    1. Then I probably photographed you, I was there and took hundreds of photos that day.
I'd offer to send you some shots but lost them all in a fire in 2004.

    2. Haw ! Good times. Most of the other towns had nice pretty uniforms and flags and fife/drummers, our bunch was blue collar, firemen and policemen, all dressed like ruffian farmers from the period. We'd start at about 03:00 on the march, and by the time we hit Concord all these guys were well lubricated from the grog in their wooden canteens. Lots of musket fire, double charges.

  7. Watching the tube my first thought when I saw your header: Paul Revere and the Raiders!.....Oops.....No electric geetars back then.
Can you picture white dudes meeting up with the local land owning Indians with swell drum sets with electrical speakers? "WINGER'S DRUMS" come to my ears.
I can think about we would have been friends, sharing music back then..
    Oh Well, dreaming..

  8. It's the best history of the beginning of the Revolutionary War ever written, and I have them all. We use it as the foundational text for the history lessons we teach in Project Appleseed.
