And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Looks like it ran into another aircraft, or one hit him, the damage is kind of along one line. It must have managed some flight cause its landing gear is down.
I remember reading one account of an American pilot who barely made it back across the Channel in his shot up plane and managed to land safely. The crew chief took one look at the P-47, all shot to hell, and started cussing. "Why the hell didn't you bail out and let it sink in the Channel?", he asked. The pilot, confused, asked WTH? The crew chief answered "Well now that you landed the damn thing, they're gonna expect me to fricking fix it!"
I saw a story about during the war the plane manufacturers were making maps of the locations of all the bullet holes and flak damage on the planes that returned, to add armor plating, and someone said, "they dont need armor in the spots that are damaged, since these planes made it back,
maybe yall should add armor to the undamaged places, what if the planes that got hit in the undamaged places were the ones that didnt make it back home?
Jeeezuz! Did that thing really keep flying after being hit like that, and fly well enough to land on its wheels?
ReplyDeleteWas that ground damage? If not for that huge engine, it probably wouldn't have been able to stay airborne if it was hit in the air.
ReplyDeleteGotta be on the ground. Note the drop tanks are still in place...
ReplyDeleteNo worries, a little duct tape and staples and that'll buff right out.

ReplyDeleteCrew chief: "Lieutenant, when I LOAN you my airplane, I expect you to bring it back in the same condition it was when it left."
Delete"Well sir, you should see the other guy!"
DeleteThere's also this one about a Warthog landing after having a wing shot off...

No pic unfortunately. I originally became aware of this when I saw the pic in an article published around the same time as the event.
