How much does just the tail weigh?

  1. It and the muscles attached are more than enough to crush him and his kayak.

  2. I figure 36 sq ft per fluke. So, 72 sq ft for the tail. I reckon they're made of cartridge, skin, and mostly fatty tissue. What that weighs per unit is a guess. I reckon 200-250 lbs per fluke for an adult male grey whale. That's my WAG.
I want to say the flukes are an average 3" thick but that's where my guess falls apart.

I wonder if them at the Monterey Bay marine lab would know?

But the sheer weight wouldn't be my concern; it's the force of that weight smashing down.
