  1. The thinner tire to miss more ruts ? I don't know the reasoning behind thin tires, but I clearly remember my '66 VW Beetle never becoming stuck or high centered on the ranch roads we drove. And these roads were rarely bladed smooth - natural traffic kept them clear.

  2. The thinner tires were the result of two factors: tire manufacturing technology limitations and, more importantly, the manufacturers being incredibly cheap.
