A commenter recommended this, and indeed it looks quite interesting

  1. Heartily recommended. He has written/drawn other books on different subjects. At one time, I bought everything he had and made them available to my kids. All his books are incredibly detailed and crammed full of useful and interesting information. You WILL learn from these and have fun doing so.

  2. BTW CW, THANK YOU for reading the comments and acting on them. I saw this book mentioned on another post yesterday, meant to add my own comment of endorsement, and promptly got distracted. It is to your great credit that you follow through and explore reader comments, opening up new areas of knowledge to us all. Thou Rocketh!

  3. I also recommend David Macaulay books. He did remarkable & detailed black & white illustrations of the construction of castles, cathedrals, pyramids, Roman cities, etc. He even had a PBS special where they animated the construction of a Welsh castle, interspersed with footage of the ruins of the Welsh castle he used as the model for the book. Loved that as a kid.

    1. Absolute +1 on the Macaulay books — used them as part of the kids’ homeschooling. They loved them and so did I!

    2. I linked Man-Of-War in comments, and I thank the bloghost for following up on it.
All Biesty's cross-section works are heartily recommended.

Also +100 on everything David Macaulay ever did. Castle and Cathedral won Caldecott Awards, which is like a Pulitzer for children's picture books. I have tracked down and acquired every book he's written, including Motel Of The Mysteries (imagine archaeologists finding and excavating a 1970s adult motel 500 years in the future), and also have the PBS video adaptations of Castle, Cathedral, Pyramid, and Roman City. And any edition of the Way Things Work is an awesome science primer for any age, with wooly mammoths!
