And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Some of those are probably still running today in someone's cabin or basement
We had an old natural gas refrigerator that my dad used in the garage for beer, mostly.
I remember it in the basement of one house, then the garage of the next house, for as long as I can remember. Must have been at least 40 years old.
Then on day, the gas company showed up and took it away; apparently all gas-powered refrigerators had been declared unsafe and had to be removed. How they knew we had it, I'll never know.
My garage beer keeper is a 1950 General Electric Refrigerating Machine from my wife's grandparents. 75 years and has never been serviced! (Course it's not real "purty" anymore) Bubbarust
Yet another one of those things you scratch your head and ask, "why in the world did nobody ever think about putting them on casters or put wheels on the bottom?" It was a challenge opening the old positive lock doors after midnight without making enough noise to wake the dead, or at least it sure sounded like that.
In 1941, my Grandpa Lind could see what was coming, so he bought a new Ford, a new International Harvester chest freezer, and a Frigidaire refrigerator. The freezer and the refrigerator are still chugging along at my Uncle Charlie 's place.
Intelligent design as heat rises, they put the freezer unit on the bottom.
ReplyDeleteThey do run forever.
I'd like 2 please.
sheet metal cabinets - a bygone era
DeleteI think there is a german company that has "reinvented" them, and quite costly....Siemetic or something.

Make sure your money's right.
I wonder if a Plain Jane refrigerator, built like they used to be built, would sell today?
ReplyDeleteThey do last almost forever. Heavier than heck, though.

ReplyDeleteMy beer fridge is from 1962. Had to put a defrost timer on it in 1990.

ReplyDeleteThey do still work, but they are expensive to operate
ReplyDeleteAdd the cost of power to the cost of buying a NEW one every 8-10 years and see how that compares! Total cost of ownership is the thing to track.
DeleteThey eat well in that home. My fridge doesn't look like that when you open the door.
