Owl on Cruise. Quite the wingspan, there.

  1. Sitting in the dappled sun beneath the Sequoia I was pleasantly surprised to watch an owl silently swoop to a landing mere feet from me. It was only that I caught him in the corner of my eye.
As I looked from whence he came, I spied a second owl gliding just as silently to join its mate. Fantastic, a real marvel.

  2. Owls are large birds. That got me to thinking. Are there birds of prey which aren't large? Perhaps the swiftest of them all, the Peregrine Falcon.

    1. American Kestrel , about the size of a bluejay. Mean little things if you're a mouse or grasshopper.

  3. Kites and Shrikes are medium-sized to small birds, much smaller than a Peregrine.

  4. Northern Shrikes are about the size of a robin and absolutely the most brutal and effective killer I've ever seen.

Changed my life last January when one took down a bird the same size by beating it against the ground until something broke, then grabbed it and flew off.
