And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
In my county, there is a mine payroll sack still unfound. From a stagecoach holdup just after the Civil War. Value then was $52,000. From testimony of one of the robbers and from two locals, it's narrowed down to a 7 mile stretch of the road. Including a draw the three robbers were seen going into, two coming out.
The robber said they buried the loot under a root of a large tree near a ranch. The only tree fitting the description was later cut down by the rancher who didn't know. His home burned down and he left the area for good. I guess no one could remember where that ranch and tree had been.
Maybe that sounds implausible. But there are stories like that all over the West. When I was working a spell in Calaveres County, two men found the loot from a robbery done during the Gold Rush. It made for some excited chatter in that area.
I understand that Gen. Braddock's payroll box, lost during the retreat from Monongahela during the French and Indian War, is still out there somewhere. BTW, Braddock was mortally wounded early in the battle and the scattered British retreat was saved by a little-known fellow named Washington.
