    1. But remember, minimum wage was probably around $2.00 an hour too.

    2. Incorrect on the minimum wage. When I started working in 1980, it was $1.80/hr. This look like it's from the '60s.

    3. My first job, for the summer of 1963, was a lifeguard at a lake at a local campground. I was "satisfied" earning $0.99 per hour. As a side note, the lifeguards were also the camp maintenance workers. We cleaned the showers and toilets, cleaned and raked the "beach", hauled trash, collected firewood and whatever else the owner told us to do.

    4. U.S. minimum wage in 1966-$1.25/h

    5. It was $2.15 when I started working in 1976. An ice cream cone was 25 cents. A burger was about 85 cents.

    6. The minimum went to $2.65 an hour in January 1978, $2.90 in January 1979, $3.10 in January 1980, and $3.35 in
      January 1981.

    1. 1969, the year the McDonald's introduced the Big Mac. I was still in the USMC after a tour in Vietnam. Two buddies and I went to a McDonald's near Camp Pendleton and got three Big Mac's for $1.00. I think that the regular price was $0.49 each.

  3. When I was 10 or 11 (1955-6) I snuck through a fence into a horse show. I was hot, thirsty and hungry when I found a 50 cent piece in the grass! Got a hot dog & a Coke! Always remember that as a lucky day!

  4. Better be ready to pay a lot more for your sandwiches! Lots of our food comes from Canada and Mexico not to mention migrants process meat and pick vegetables in the US.

Imported food will be more expensive food made in the US will also be more expensive! True genius at work here.

By the end of Trump's term we will miss the good old days of the $12 McDonalds meal.

By the way and not to rub it in; but all of you that remember when you could get a sandwich with a quarter are likely collecting social security and use medicare for your medical needs...
Are you sure that your next check will get to you on time now that Elon has control of the US payments system? Are you positive that you will be able to go see the doctor next time you need it? RFK and Dr. Oz control your healthcare. What could go wrong? Enjoy the next 4 years(at least)!

    1. Your acute, likely chronic, cognitive dissonance is showing.

    2. I'm glad RFK Jr. could be in charge. Tired of the treating symptoms and not the root cause. I quit going to the doctor in 2020. Prior to that I cured myself of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and Type I diabetes without the help of any medical "professionals."

Suck it libtard! That was an unusually long comment for you! How did you manage to string so many words together?

    3. Your comment 2 minutes past that one is also a dead giveaway.

    4. Since the US feeds the world, I am not so sure about how much and what kind of food comes from the other two NAFTA countries.

  5. I don't remember it that cheap. I was a high school Senior in 79. A Saturday night date where a pizza and a pitcher of coke was under $8. Two tickets to the movies was $4.50 at the downtown theater and $5 at the mall.

    1. Sea Breeze is an amusement park in Rochester NY. Don't remember the sandwich shop if this was near there.

  8. The U.S. imported more than $45 billion in agricultural products from Mexico in 2023, including fresh strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and beef, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The U.S. also imports Mexican beer, tequila and other drinks and spirits.

Meanwhile, the U.S. imported about $40 billion of Canadian agricultural products that same year, including beef, pork, grains, potatoes and canola oil, the USDA notes.

    1. Yes, I worked at McD's around then also. I enjoyed their roast beef sandwiches, a long gone menu item.

  11. My initial reaction on that photo was that it's an Australian photo, the Peter's Ice cream in red letters on the top left is a bit of a giveaway. I don't think Peters is sold in the US, but its a one of the top 2 or 3 ice cream producers over here.
According to this link, the photo was from 1964, prices are certainly from a while back.

  13. Money was "Silver" back then

  14. I remember prices like that in the 50s. Problem was, you did not have 50 cents.

  15. I just checked the closing price of silver which is at $32.56 per troy oz. That would make a ten cent silver coin worth about $3.20. I am ignoring the facts that the coin is only 90% silver and other adjustments to keep it simple; which would make the ham sandwich cost about $6.40 in todays money, roughly comparable.
