And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Eyvind Earle (American, 1916-2000) Red Barn and Tree Snow, 1976 Serigraph on paper
Lots of lines, angularity in the pic. Designed to keep the eye moving. But evocative of harmony too. Stark, sparse, simplistic.
Strong, bold vertical line intersecting the horizontal. The horizontal line is below the middle third of the image. (My opinion, the only time the horizontal should be in the middle third is when showing mirror image such as reflection on water.)
Gray shading not necessary but does add a muted texture of horizontal lines. The shading does not retract from the image.
Tomorrow, Chapter II about the striking addition of color. Haha
Handsome piece.
ReplyDeleteThe art series is excellent, me being unschooled on style, artist methods, and such. Very educational.
