And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Embedded in the marble steps of the Galleria Colonna is this French cannonball, fired during the Siege of Rome [1849].
I've been in a few houses on The Battery in downtown Charleston that have cannonballs stuck in walls & floors. There supposed to blow up but a lot don't.
1960 had my tonsils removed at Tripler hospital on oahu there were japanese bullet holes over my recovery crib in the wall. They remain there to this day.
Not all cannonballs were meant to be explosive. I don't know what was used in Charleston, but this is interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_shot
