And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Hollywood should have made a movie about Doug Fairbanks Jr's wartime escapades, but they hated that he actually served in combat, so he went from the #1 moviestar prior to the war, to someone who had trouble getting a job afterwards due to their antiwar sentiments.

He didn't get those out of a Cracker Jack box.
That Silver Star was originally written up for a higher award, but then they realized he was "an actor", and it was downgraded a couple levels. IIRC, it was originally the Navy Cross. I think this was for going head to head with a much more heavily armed German warship with his MTB . One of those situations where if they didn't stop it, the island invasion he was working on was going to be in big trouble.
DeleteThe military/Pentagon types didn't care for hollywood individuals in general.
