And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Excellent series of books! I've been straight through them twice in print, and then later again on Audible . Got a new perspective on it each time through . Now I'm reading the equally outstanding series by a different author about a character named Bolitho , which I also strongly recommend . RetRsvMike
The Bolitho books, by Alexander Kent, are a good read. Kent also wrote a series of Royal Navy stories set in the 20th century under the name Douglas Reeman. Kent himself served in the RN.
I concur with everyone. This is a superb series of novels, some 20 or more. O'Brian is a master at describing sea states. Every novel has at least one mesmerizing scene.
There are also some supplementary books providing background information, maps, etc., often by other people.
The HMS Surprise was a real ship that was originally the French Navy "Unite'" before the Royal Navy captured it and rebuilt it.

ReplyDeleteI’m struggling to finish The Mauritius Command. Writing style, typeset, punctuation, paragraphs, etc. are not easy (IMO).
ReplyDeleteread 'em all, would sprint to the bookstore before it closed to get the next one.
ReplyDeleteBTW, a "killick" is a ship's smallest anchor...
the film was really good, too, and I was ready to ram if it wasn't. there's a guy using the seat of ease in the dark during the gale.
