Good fire shouldn't smoke much. My wood stove has a internal secondary burn chamber. It burns the fumes that contains flammable gas. Light a candle let it burn a few minutes then blow out the candle and you can re-light the smoke trail and it will follow it down to the candle. Kinda how a gasifyer works
