And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Hindenburg over New Jersey just before the unfortunate accident
There was aluminium powder in the dope to protect the fabric from UV. The underside of the fabric was covered with iron oxide. Having the two ingredients for thermite on opposite sides of the fabric painted with nitro-cellulose was not a good idea. Al_in_Ottawa
The German company's engineers figured out what happened fairly quickly, but never made the info public. They figured out they looked better if the blame was assigned to the Americans ban on selling them helium. A search of stored company documents turned up the info a few years ago.
Tests of skin fabric found in/on the crash site years earlier(!) clued in researchers on the problem, but they were surprised to find the Germans had lied about the skin coating, and sat on the data for 5+ decades.
My dad saw the Hindenburg fly over their home in Clifton, probably in 1936. He was in awe of the size and majesty of that airship and said it was one of the most impressive things he had ever seen.
Lakehurst Naval Air Station... A very sad day.
ReplyDeleteThe krauts should have paid for helium.
ReplyDeleteFDR forbade the sale of helium to Germany. And it was the powered aluminum skin that doomed them.
