Take a long, cool drink

  1. It's a great weight-loss program considering the amount of giardia in the water.

  2. In the 60s and 70s I did a lot of hiking and camping in the Uinta mountains. We drank out of streams like this with no fear. Now, just about every such stream has giardia in it. So now I carry a Katadyn to make sure I don’t have problems.

  3. I don't care how clean it LOOKS, put some iodine tabs in it first and wait twenty minutes.

  4. Don’t know how we did it, but during my time in 2nd Recon Bn. We would fill our canteens anytime we saw clear running water. Anywhere in the world. Never had a bad reaction.
I guess we just built up a immunity.

    1. All them "immunizations" weren't for nothing. Back in the 70's going through boot I and a couple others were "volunteered" to fill the metal syringes for the whole series in the company with a cartridge of what I can recall as the gamma globulin or peanut butter shot also known as the golfball. I seen 240 recruits approx get that in the back left cheek. Best laughs I had in months.

  5. Lots of giardia in the water served at the Rock Store above Los Angeles back in the 80s.

  6. The last servey on flowing water in North America was that ALL of it was contaminated with Giardia, at a minimum. There is no safe flowing/standing water for humans. Spring water may be okay.
