shame the blade is coated, plain 1095 stained is a mark of maturity.

    1. You can remove the coating with paint remover. I did that to both my ESSE's. Very good knives. Tough and take a very keen long edge.

I used my 6" version to peel the bark off of a couple of green elm branches that I'm going to use for tool handles on a couple of vintage tools with damaged handles. The knife actually got sharper as I used it.

    2. that should be "long lasting" edge. - Nemo

That 6" version that I have has a small ferro rod and some cotton tinder secreted under one side of the scales. It also has a divot on one of the scales for use as the bearing block for a bow drill and a washer on the lanyard to facilitate scale removal in case you don't have some other tool to use to remove the scales. I added a few of same sized SS washers to the lanyard because two is one and one is none.

The name of the 6" model is "Laser Strike". Don't know if ESSE is producing them or not. Top notch survival knife, IMHO.

    3. ESSEE still makes the Laser Strike. Thanks for the recommendation. It's now on my list.

  3. I have a PR4 that I take camping and hunting. I also have an ESSEE-5 that I've read was designed for use by AF pilots, but I wish I'd gotten the 4. The 5 is heavy and unwieldy.

What I'd like to have is the Expat cleaver, but not at the price they're asking.

    1. You could get a cheaper version made of Chinesium. Do that and tell us how that works out.
