That should make them think long and hard about pulling stunts like this again

Judge throws the book at Just Stop Oil protesters: Eco activists who scaled a bridge over the Dartford Crossing and caused 40 HOURS of gridlock are jailed for five years in record sentence for climate action.

Passing sentence yesterday, judge Shane Collery KC said locking the pair up would hopefully deter anyone else from taking part in similar demonstrations.

'You have to be punished for the chaos you caused and to deter others from copying you,' he said.

The judge said that Trowland, who has six previous convictions relating to protests, had a 'leading role', while Decker had one previous conviction relating to a protest.

The judge said that the pair 'plainly believed you knew better than everyone else', adding: 'In short, to hell with everyone else.'

'By your actions you caused this very important road to be closed for 40 hours,' the judge said, noting that the disruption affected 'many tens of thousands, some very significantly'.

    1. Probably.
In the meantime, rather than being allowed to recline on their asses while consuming taxpayer resources, they should be forced to walk that bridge each day policing litter from one end to the other. ALL DAY LONG, EVERY DAM DAY.

    2. I'd be willing to wager that the whole thing will be quietly broomed on appeal, then the "activists" will sue and receive large settlements, any takers?

    3. @Matthew--
Judges must be Judged. The equivalent of a Keel Hauling is the only answer I can come up with except for hanging from lampposts for Judges who refuse to Judge.

  2. Fake news once again: Facts: "Morgan Trowland, 40, and Marcus Decker, 34, were sentenced at Southend Crown Court to three years in prison, and two years and seven months in prison respectively, for causing a public nuisance."

  3. Doubt it will deter. People like that wear such as a badge of honor.

  4. At least they Paid a price. Too many judges would have let them off, which would encourage more of the same.

  5. You'll know that conservatives have decided they would prefer to win, when they start to quietly organize for a 'warm welcome' for the future inmates, with some of their fellow prisoners.

    1. Other than the J6 special prison where are they going to encounter conservatives in prison?

    2. Why would you need conservatives? In the prison economy, many services are available for a simple fee.

  6. An execution was out of the question? What a pity to see so much judicial restraint.

  7. On the bright side these fresh "meat" pleasure boys will be passed around among the hard core inmates

  8. Punishment should have been "Long Time - Hard Time".
Deterence will be enhanced by "if you can't do time, don't do the crime". Or, as immortalized in the Byng Principle; punishment should serve "in order to encourage the others" - "pour encourager les autres".

  9. So, so, so, wait, the british logic is harsh punishment is a deterrent to future crimes?
Have any DAs in the big citites talked to this judge? We let our criminals go free and make them pinky-swear not to carjack and kill someone again. Then they usually go out carjack and kill someone.

  10. Ah.. They hung an obnoxious sign. It was the police response to their sign that caused the local misery.
