And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Just imagine the incredible amount of civil resources that took. When people moan about the wealthy giving to the Church or other institutions for stuff like this, instead of just giving the money to the poor, they never seem to think of all the direct and indirect jobs these long term projects generated.
Great point, and you are so right! When those workmen attended church, they could point out to their children and grandchildren: "I built that". And all the people including the poor could enjoy the beautiful surroundings every week. Imagine being a child and getting to play on that floor and make up your own stories about what was happening in the pictures!
The expertise that was required to make that floor no longer exists. I remember when I was driving a tractor trailer through Philadelphia, west of the Philadelphia Zoo. There'd be these houses boarded up and used as crack houses, that were made using cut stone. They're probably gone now but it was a shame that there was houses that just couldn't be built today because nobody knows how.
