  1. I encountered river otters on the central Oregon coast in the early years of my career as a fish biologist quite often. River otters were common. One day, I inadvertently cornered one, hiking up a survey creek one day. He came back at me, hissing and chopping jaws, and then disappeared. I don't think I backed up 20 feet so fast, ever.
