  2. Once known as the last of the gun fighters, until we discovered that yeah, you need a gun.

    1. No, that was its older brother the F-8 Crusader. SLUF was just a mud mover.

  3. There's a tin can struggling along cutting through the bird farm's garbage just in case...

  4. A-7's cousin if not older brother was the F-8 Crusader.
“Part-time” job of my Series Commander at Parris Island was driving an F-8 out of nearby MCAS Beaufort. On at least one occasion with a previous Series, he made a low run across the rifle range well behind the firing line while one of his recruit platoons was practicing in the run-up to qualification day. Needless to say that was in the Old Corps days of 1965.

  5. 16,000 lbs of reach out and touch someone. I think the most of anything we had at the time. (excluding BUFFs)

    1. The A-6 was close; 14000# of ordnance on 5 stations, 16000# of fuel. That was a big claim to fame, that it could carry it's own weight in fuel and ordnance.

  6. Used to watch them out of Patrick AFB, flown by FLANG. Neat planes.

It took a couple years for the A-10 drivers to be as good and accurate as the ANG pilots in tactical air competitions.

  7. SLUF proved that a big enough engine didn't require big wings for lift.

@Beans I liked watching the U2's take off and land at Patrick.
