I'm gonna give these a go to help keep my citrus trees alive over the winter. Lay one around the base then cover the tree. Should work.

  1. I had an oilpan patch heater that I put on top of the wellhead to handle those extremely cold nights now that incandescent bulbs have been outlawed.

  3. I'm no expert in frost damage control, but I have found clear plastic sheeting is almost worthless as it lets the thermal radiation leave to the sky, but an old bed sheet draped over a lemon tree saved all the leaves and limbs that it covered. The total BTUs delivered by that seed warmer may not be enough. I've toyed with the idea of filling 5 gallon buckets with water and putting them under the cover; hopefully their thermal mass would provide some warmth. Putting a seed warmer under a bucket of water and leaving it on all day would be an idea, as the water would warm up and radiate during the night. Every little bit helps. Except for the possible fire danger a small charcoal briquet fire in a gallon paint can with a few holes in the sides might provide that essential heat all night long. The trick would be to keep the charcoal going as many hours as possible by the number of holes in the can.
