And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Those Russians liked big subs, but bigger wasn't always better, at least during the years I served in the submarine Navy. Some of the Russian sub sound signatures were so loud, they could be heard from miles and miles away (actual distance remains somewhat classified). Though I wasn't a Sonarman, I enjoyed the times I sat in the sonar shack listening to Russian subs, and all kinds of ocean life. The ocean is fairly noisy.
Though I enjoyed Hunt for Red October, being a submariner I noted many a not realistic view of what the actual inside of a sub is like. When I served (79 - 84), the Navy had such good acoustic data on the Soviet fleet the sonar computer system could ID which particular sub was running. The sonarmen's job was basically to confirm the computer's ID, and put a solid track on the sub.
Even for a big boat, the Typhoon class was one of the Sov's quieter boats back in the day compared to the Alfa. Not as quiet as the Victor 3, but it's huge. For a tiny boat, when running in the deep water channel, the Alfa was noisy enough to hear at least 100s of km away.

ReplyDeleteso that's why they came up with caterpillar drive in the Hunt for Red October? ;-)
DeleteSeriously with that sort of size, have always wondered how stealthy they were/are.
