The Golden Gate Bridge on opening day 1937

  1. I just saw a TV program highlighting this bridge's construction. Seems in 1987 on the 50th anniversary they held a "walk across the Golden Gate" and figured 80 to 90 thousand would partake. It turns out 300,000 showed up and the engineers worried the bridge might collapse.

    1. I was there and I was definitely worried. I came from the Marin side, had an easy walk to SF, cruised Golden Gate Park, had a hot dog then headed back. We hit a wall of people who had walked south to north and were headed back to SF. The bridge was end to end, rail to rail pedestrians. The arch was almost flattened and the deck was all over the place. Pretty tense time.
