And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Inspecting pinion stands at the Falk Steelworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1965
I was tempted to opine that a shaft of that diameter would likely be supported by plain bearings, but when I looked carefully and saw the length of the near keyway, I decided you are right - ball bearings it is
Not even ball bearings, simple babbitt-lined journal bearings running pressurized oil. Probably running in the cuts close to the gear face. We ran smaller versions of these gears on my submarine
Citroen's logo is based on the layout of double helical gears. Andre Citroën bought the rights to the invention of the herringbone gear from a relative in Poland and began manufacturing them in Paris out of steel.
