And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Looking up that incident, I'm shocked that only 856 people are known to have died. I'd have assumed that since it could carry 1,955 passengers that at least 5,000 died. That was how those damned things operated when I was there half a lifetime ago. Like thw joke, "How many Filipinos can fit in a jeepney?" Answer: "Always one more," or "All of them. Every goddamned one of them."
Tragic. Folks don't always seem to know when to acknowledge that sometimes the schedule has to change, and let the weather rule, for awhile!
ReplyDeleteI think that the ship had a serious corrosion issue that led to the capsize. Ballast tanks rusted through and she couldn't compensate.
