Douglas A-3 Skywarrior

  1. Original Navy designation A3D and coupled with its poor reputation because of weak seat ejection system, also known as "All 3 Dead". Three crew members, pilot, co-pilot, bombadier.

  2. The Air Force version (B-66) had ejection seats, the Navy version did not. You had to get up and slide down the entry door located just behind the nose wheelwell.

The particular one shown above was the CNO's bird.

  3. I remember one used to be stationed at NATC Patuxent River, hanger 201, which also happens to be where the Vigilante is mounted on a stick....always thought A3D stood in stark contrast to the new aircraft being tested there....

  4. My Dad flew them off Midway, pilot, bombardier/navigator, crewman, no co-pilot.
