  1. Sometime in the middle '60s, my wife and I took the baby and went down to pick up our license tags at the last minute, in downtown San Antonio.

Working the line and campaigning for a local office of some kind was the singing cowboy Red River Dave McEnery, singing his original hit "Amelia Earhart's Last Flight."

    There's a beautiful, beautiful field,
Far away in a land that is fair.
Happy Landings to you, Amelia Earhart,
Farewell first lady of the air.

  2. could navigate well enough to hit a continent, could eventually land on the ground(required when in flight by the laws of gravity) when flying over solid ground, married well, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, had looks that made many an Iowa milkmaid look better, and has had many legends attributed to her.
    some people need closer supervision.
