And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

I'm starting to relate to and resemble Will Geer more than Rob Redford
Robert Redford playing the role of Liver Eating Johnson one of the baddest bad asses to have ever walked the face of the Earth! This movie did not do the character justice. It was said that Johnson ate the livers of the Crow braves he killed. It is more likely that he cut them out left them for the animals becuase the Crow believed that the liver was a mans soul and one could not get to paradise without it.
He is said to have killed 300 or more Crow braves over the decades. The Crow named him Crow Killer.
I always thought Will Geere was a great character actor but I just can't seem to get past his lifestyle choices and politics, sorry. Great movie anyway.
I don't know anything about Geer's lifestyle choices. But you know it's a funny thing about that era. I was too young to understand what was happening at the time, and with age I have come to appreciate the patriotism of those in Hollywood that cooperated to some degree with Congressional testimony (many actors drew a line and wouldn't fully cooperate) but I also find myself also admiring those who were blacklisted for not cooperating and telling Congress to stuff it. In the end all that McCarthyism was mostly mean-spirited buffoonery. I think those who were patriotic about it were thinking mostly of America's solidarity in WWII and just carrying on. I think those who told Congress to stuff it were thinking mostly about higher principle and correctly perceiving Congress as being cynically self-serving. I can't think of any memorable criminality or treason that was identified by those hearings. Probably just my own shortcomings.
One of Redford's and Geer's better efforts, I've always thought.
ReplyDeleteGeer: "Grizz".
ReplyDeleteHaha! - Me, too!
ReplyDelete"Your sure you've hunted Grizz before Pilgrim?"
ReplyDelete"Skin that one; I'll go get another."

Read the book two years ago, his was a sad story in a lot of ways. And yes he was a bad ass! Not many around like him anymore...
