Could've been worse, but bad enough

Don Garlits in Swamp Rat XIII at Lions, March 8 1970
Catastrophic clutch explosion tore the car in half, severed several toes and left Garlits with a permanent limp.

  1. After this incident Big Daddy Don put the engine behind him and started the rear engine era.

  2. Actually it was not the clutch that failed. It was the two speed Lenco transmission that exploded. You can check out the story from Big Daddy's own mouth.

  4. The next time you’re near Ocala, Florida, check out the Don Garlits museum on I-75. Some fascinating stuff for gear heads and a drool-worthy classic car collection.
