And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I spent many years up in Iceland in the 1970s. Always looked for the tree that the good looking women were hiding behind. after a while, I was told that the Icelanders had roasted the last tree into charcoal five hundred years ago for payment of tribute to the Danish kingdom, after which they were allowed to secede from Denmark. Wherefore Iceland is now the oldest continuous republic in the world. so, it took thirty some years for a new crop of good looking Icelandic women to mature. Time to revisit the places of our youth and see what sprouted from the seeds of that time.
