All the better to smell you with...

Douglas C-124C Globemaster II

  1. OOPS!

The "Globemaster II" is the current C-17 military cargo jet.

The C-124 was the original "Globemaster".

Crews of the C-124 "Globemaster" referred to it as, "Old Shaky".

As a soldier in the United States Army, I was fortunate enough to be able to fly in one as a "Military Hop" passenger, on one of the last flights of the soon-to-be-retired, near-obsolete C-124 "Globemaster", hauling two (02) UH-1 "Iroquois" helicopters from McChord Air Force Base, Washington, to Gray Army Air Field, Texas, and terminating at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas.

The worst American military aircraft disaster in history was of a C-124 "Globemaster", loaded with troops returning home from the war in Korea, which crashed on take-off at Yokota Air Force Base in Japan, exploding into flames and killing everyone on board.

The C-17 is the "Globemaster III".

So, what was the ORIGINAL "Globemaster"?

  3. The ORIGINAL "Globemaster" was the C-74, of which only fourteen (14) were built.
