Sinking a ship

  1. Ah, once again proving being hit by a missile sucks rocks, but torpedoes are the true ship-killers.

    Sigh. We're supposed to do that to enemy ships, not our own.

    1. We don't have any enemies that have ships.

  2. I thought it was loose lips that did the job.

  3. Millions of dollars in steel, thrown away. Not to mention the millions of dollars in weaponry used up.

    1. Yeah, that's always made no sense to me. All that steel, just blown up & sunk; and it even costs us to do that.

  4. I know the Navy does this for firing practice and for making artificial reefs, but I am surprised they left the mast sticking up.

  6. Back in the 80s, I did some work on that ship. I was part of crew
    that removed and rebuilt a simplex double acting reciprocating
    steam pump. We took the machine to our shop, rebuilt it and
    reinstalled it.

    One of worst parts of the job was there were no electric hoists
    anywhere to be found. It was all manual chain-falls and come
    alongs. Every time we came to a bulkhead, we had to lift the
    pump and cart using beam clamps and "walk" it through the hatch
    using 2 come alongs.

  7. I have said this before.
    These 1179 class LST's (if modernized) could do everything and more that the LCS's are supposed to do with the exception of speed.
    And for a hell of a lot less money.
