There's a risk a large chunk could break off and cause a tidal wave to blast into the village.
Authorities have evacuated those living closest to the shoreline in Innaarsuit, a village of about 170 souls.
Something that may come as a bit of a surprise is that most of the residents of Innaarsuit, one of seaside communities in Greenland with a marine-based economy, don't know how to swim. This adds to the risk of a potential tidal wave or flooding.
No one swims because the water is so darned cold that a man could only live a few minutes in it before it would kill him.
That's an ominous looking crack in the side of the berg. 90% of the thing is under water so it must be one big chunk of ice.....
ReplyDeleteI thought that all of that ice would have melted by now. What's going on? I thought that it was 'settled science'.
ReplyDeleteWho would want to learn to swim in that water. And if they did, there would be no kids conceived there. The water is just too damn cold.
ReplyDeleteIf Al Gore visited- would the Reverse Al Gore Effect mean that the village warmed up and the iceberg would melt? Asking for a friend.
